State of Emergency

Info

A woman, her husband, and their child have made it: they live in a secure luxury residential complex by “Pearly Gates,” the global market leader in maximum-security housing units. “Freedom is security. Security is freedom” is the seductive claim. Yet the fear of the uncertain outside world, social decline, and being cast out of the gated community eats deep into the family.
In “State of Emergency,” Falk Richter encapsulates a family’s sense of insecurity. Facts and feelings blur, and the protective fence becomes the wall of an inner prison – a metaphor for the fears of decline in our affluent society.
LOKSTOFF! is reviving the play after nine years, situating it in the GERBER urban department store, which, with its gated community, perfectly embodies the tension between public and private space. As a utopian counter-model, we present Oscar Wilde’s “The Selfish Giant” alongside it – a plea for community spirit and an open society.
